ABOUT HARPUTS OWN:
Where we are now is what happened before.
More than thirty years ago Harputs adidas first opened in Oakland, California. Over the years, business evolved; Harputs adidas gave birth to Harputs Market and we transitioned from slinging sneakers to providing San Francisco with an outpost for avant-garde and rare designers, stocking names like Martin Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, and Stephan Schneider. This exposure to the industry made us wonder if we could produce clothing ourselves, but without the right people, right equipment, and right timing it was merely just an idea we entertained. It took additions to our team to get us going. Upon their arrival, we moved our industrial sewing machines out of storage and turned our upstairs loft into a working studio. At the same time, we discovered a local tailor who had shut down his operations in 1989, leaving his factory and, consequently, all of his fabrics untouched for twenty years. As he was working to get out of the business and we were working to find a way in, he provides us with both the direction and resources to begin and grow.
The end result: an evolutionary collection we call Harputs OWN.
We take a pragmatic approach to design, concentrating on the development of select "generic" garments (a shift dress, sweater, blazer) as statement pieces. Our creative process leans on curiosity and experimentation in conjunction with the various influences that inform our work: how each garment ages, how our customers react, and what new fabric we find. As a result, each piece is part of a communal effort and, thus, always subject to change. Our aesthetic is simple yet unconventional- intelligent pieces that can be insensibly worn. By pairing tailoring techniques and refined details with simple silhouettes each piece is complex, yet uncomplicated. Ultimately, we aim to make easy clothing that can be worn multiple ways, accentuate many different body types, and lasts over time.

kate ellen’s designs are well-crafted with emphasis on how the pieces accentuate the body, move with the wearer, and last over time both in design and durability. kate ellen crafts every piece entirely by hand with much thought and intention; her designs are very limited edition or exclusive one-of-a-kind work.
kate ellen’s creative process is typically spontaneous, experimental & guided by the material—using reclaimed 14k gold, sterling and fine silver, 14k gold-fill, brass, and found objects such as nuts, screws, bone, stones, all thread, and industrial hardware.
meet her newest collection:
kate ellen's new spring '10 collection, META is about to hit the bay area. META: meaning after, beyond, with, adjacent, and self. the collection uses mixed metals in bold configurations that play with asymmetry and movement with an aesthetic that ranges from romantic industrialism to high-gloss glitz and glamour. META is about confidence, playfulness, and the joy of going where life brings us: often to surprising places we never thought we'd go.
meet her debut collection:
the acetylene will collection is about accessing fortitude through craft. the name is borrowed from the writings of edna st. vincent millay who was a constant companion during the creation of the collection. kate ellen found that there is great power in depending on one’s own trained hand to call forth a feeling and manifest it into an object that can be seen, held and worn. and like many metalsmiths, kate ellen uses an acetylene torch to do the soldering work, hence possessing both a metaphorical and literal ‘acetylene will’. ABOUT GORDON STEVENSON:
Born, raised, and schooled in New York City, Gordon Stevenson is a mixed media artist and graphic designer on the rise. With well-received solo shows at the Islip Museum (Islip, NY), Miami's American Standard Gallery, and Ochi Gallery in Sun Valley, his work has been celebrated across the country.
“Line for Line” is a series of vividly colored works of acrylic paint poured onto surfaces that range from canvas, to glass, to plexi-glass, to wood. The paintings take advantage of the physical and chemical reactions that occur when the pigment is mixed with other agents. “The moment of application, when the amplified paints meet one another, or when the paints leave the container and join the canvas, is the inspiration and point ofentry for my work. My work is not about big ideas, but about exploring andinterpreting common interactions such as chance versus intent or the idea ofharmony versus chaos.” – Gordon Stevenson
